Star Struck

     I

     Wandering blind out of orbit,
     in a whispering rush across
the face of our dream planet,

     scattering on far fields and
     standing towns its silent blaze
     of radium, plutonic fire.

     II

     The impact shattered windows
     in our sleep-ridden houses.
We woke too late in our beds,

     a people who never before
     climbed the enormous hollow of
a tree gone somewhere in smoke.

     And under our eyelids, seeds
     of light swelled and glittered
in a swarm like yellow flies.

     III

Far in space a mine exploded
on a ring of Saturn set loose
this stone dust of the ages.

     And so a starry messenger
     fell burning here, stricken
with news of our lives . . .

This earth and its radiant flesh,
     born of seawater and sand,
now fused in a violent bubble.
