The Exploration of Women

Laser Engraved Steel on folding Wood panels

40-48" x 19"

This piece looks at the experience of women’s bodies both historical and personal. The Exploration of Women uses historical gynecological text and images rendered in laser engraved steel.  This recalls the dawn of medical knowledge about our reproductive systems and the wilderness that we wander and privations we endure as this knowledge is acquired.  Even in the advanced medical systems of our modern day, the hazards of childbirth and gynecological challenges are as real now as they were for the nameless women who experienced the instruments pictured in these drawings.  This piece speaks to the confrontations that we have faced and reflects both our vulnerabilities and our indomitable strength as we move forward.
