I have always loved the play of color and pattern. Many of the pieces that I create are fabric collages, layered with snippets of material and then embellished with stitches. Nearly of the fabric is “pre-loved” and may have been a piece of clothing or perhaps a stained and faded napkin. I’ve been inspired by the Japanese technique of boro stitching. Reuse of even the smallest scraps of fabric as well as visible mending, are both characteristics of boro and can be found in my collages and other pieces.
Reuse and recycling is an ongoing theme in my work, as I explore mending and embellishing clothing and cloth bags.
I love to teach and introduce people to my work and the relaxing nature of stitching. I try to emphasize the accessibility of stitching, which is easily learned, portable, inexpensive, and a wonderful way to reuse fabric. I’ve taught at Arlington Center for the Arts, Arlington Community Education, Mystic Open Studio, Munroe Center for the Arts, Rockport Art Association, and several area libraries.
