Color Pencil, Graphite, Mixed Media
AOS 2025 Location:
Arlington Town Hall, Second Floor
Color pencil has been my medium of choice for over a decade. My subjects range from the personal, such as commissioned pet portraits, to the ordinary, like an ear of corn. Working with this medium requires a significant amount of time and patience, it can be frustrating and unforgiving - there’s little room for error.
An interest in art history has led me to appreciate all artists and forms of art. However, my own work has been inspired by artists like Cézanne, Turner and Hopper - their use of color, technique and form, but equally the storytelling style of Rockwell, L.S. Lowry, and Bruegel.
My mother is an artist and remains the most influential throughout my art journey. As a child she encouraged us to appreciate the colors, textures and shapes of everything around us, she let us ‘play’ with her acrylic paint or pastels and surrounded our home with a variety of artwork.
It is because of her that I find joy in the creation of each piece. The personal and the ordinary, it is the process of staying mindful and remaining positive that I find the most rewarding.
