My work focuses on the biodiversity of wildlife and plants on this planet. Many of the subjects I choose to represent come from the marshes, woods, mountains, and seaside of the Northeastern United States as this is my home. I look at the iconic animals familiar to many, but also call attention to the lesser seen and often endangered life that exists alongside human development.
My creative process involves exploring in nature and taking reference photos, as well as doing research about the flora and fauna around me. I then come back to my studio and start with simple sketches. I paint my animals with gouache which allows me to get subtle details. I use cut colored paper to create plants and landscape elements and define their details with pen. All these components are made separately and then adhered to a background, sometimes with pieces of board. This collaging process creates small shadows that make the elements appear three dimensional.
It is my hope that my artwork invokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild things with which we share the planet. I use art to help show the value of all life and hopefully help viewers understand the importance and interconnectedness of all living things. Through understanding and respect for wild things, hopefully people will feel the need to ensure their protection.
