My work focuses on the biodiversity of wildlife and plants on this planet. Many of the subjects I choose to represent come from the marshes, woods, mountains, and seaside of the Northeastern United States as this is my home. My creative process involves exploring in nature and taking reference photos. I then come back to my studio and start with simple sketches. I paint my animals with gouache which allows me to get subtle details. I use cut colored paper to create plants and landscape elements and define their details with pen. All these components are made separately and then adhered to a solid color background. This collaging process creates small shadows that, in some cases, make the elements appear three dimensional.
It is my hope that my artwork invokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild things with which we share the planet. I use art to help show the value of all life and hopefully help viewers understand the importance of all living things.
