TRANSLUCENT | OPAQUE

Translucent | Opaque showcases watercolors and gouaches by contemporary artists across the Greater Boston area to reinvigorate conversations around the mediums’ evolutions and applications. These water-based painting techniques date back to antiquity, yet are alive and given new life through the perspectives and approaches of these artists of today. Watercolor, consisting of pigment particles and gum arabic dissolved in water, dries to create a luminous, layered effect due to its transparency. With gouache, watercolor is blended with white fillers to create an opaque paint that dries on surfaces with a matte finish. The somewhat challenging and unpredictable nature of these mediums challenges calculation and promotes spontaneity- qualities that elevate the individual expression of the artists mastering them.

Arlington Center for the Arts has a long history of celebrated watercolor and gouache artists, classes, and teachers that incubate both creativity and community. Translucent | Opaque not only champions the artists already engaged at our art center, but also invites those working in the mediums of gouache and watercolor to join. The works on display demonstrate mastery of the medium, creating balanced compositions with thoughtful application of color theory.

About Our Curators
Marjorie Glick
Marjorie Glick (she/her/hers) is known for her large scale vivid realism watercolors that are inspired by New England’s places of antiquity and by the beauty found in nature. She has exhibited at several regional museums and galleries including the DeCordova Museum, Berkshire Art Museum, Brockton Art Museum, Beth Urdang Gallery, Boston, and the Forum Gallery in New York. Her work is in over 40 corporate and private collections including The Federal Reserve Bank, Fidelity Investments, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Tufts-New England Medical Center, all in Boston; Friends Hospital, in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of grants from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation (Artist’s Resource Trust Grant) and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She is represented by The Turtle Gallery in Deer Isle, Maine. She has served as Adjunct Faculty for The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and was a member of the faculty of the DeCordova Museum School, in Lincoln, MA from 1986-2012. She leads plein air workshops in Maine, France, and Tuscany. She holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and has studied independently with Wolf Kahn and George Nick. Vicki Paret
Vicki Kocher Paret (she/her/hers) currently lives and paints in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is a representational painter, exploring beauty in objects and place. Her formal training began with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University, and later she completed her Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education at Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. She is currently represented by Galatea Fine Art in SoWA Boston, and exhibits with SHE (Shared Habitat Earth). Her paintings are in numerous corporate and private collections, including Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Fidelity Investments Corporation, and Wellington Management Company, LLP. Vicki’s past positions include serving as the Chair of the Art Department at Waring School in Beverly, and being on faculty at the DeCordova Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. Creating with the Curators Workshop

Join ACA teaching artists and Translucent | Opaque curators, Marjorie Glick and Vicki Paret in an approachable introduction to watercolor and gouache! The artists will talk about the similarities and differences of the mediums, facilitate demonstrations, and conclude with a hands-on workshop with materials for experimentation.
Tour Translucent | Opaque with the Artists!
March 21, 6:30-8pm in the Shaira Ali Gallery
Join some of our Translucent | Opaque exhibiting artists in an exploration of their work, process, and inspiration. After a brief “tour” of their work, artists will have a short Q&A session with attendees to dig a little deeper into their work. This is a great opportunity to expand your understanding of these artists’ processes, connect with other creatives in the community, and to get inspired. No registration is required. This event is free and open to all ages.

Movement: ArtLinks Annual Collaborative Show
February 1-28, 2024
Reception: Wednesday February 7, 2024 7-8:30pm
This year’s collaborative show features movement in all of its various forms. ArtLinks Arlington members were asked to watch Dance Caliente’s video, Dance Caliente Brings the World to Your Feet, which features a couple dancing in various styles with different costumes. Artists of any medium could then respond to the video or movement as a concept. The collaborative shows a wide variety of work from photography to poetry.
